GLOSSARY OF BETTING TERMS
A
Accumulator: A single bet consisting of selections from different games. Punters, usually, bet on the outcomes of games or options within games. This can include goals per game, first scorer or even bet on both teams scoring. (See also “Multiple bet”)
Across the Board: Betting on a horse to Win, or finish in the top places.
Ante-post: A bet placed before the horse betting market has opened or the final field has been declared when odds are often more favourable.
Asian Handicap: Most common in soccer, the better team is “handicapped” by 0.25 to 2.0 goals against. These are two-way bets since a draw/tie option is not offered.
Away Score Both Halves: Away team must score at least 1 goal in each half.

Banker: Similar to a round robin bet in the US where different teams are placed in a ‘system bet’ to make different ‘accumulator’ (parlay) bets.
Bet: Money staked on the outcome of a contest.
Bet code (Code share): Also known as voucher codes or promo codes, they are used to give clients discounts or a prize. They are given to new clients or for existing clients to try new games or betting options.
Bet slip: Bet slips will include all possible returns with respect to your bet.
BiPot (Tote Bet): Choose first or second in 6 consecutive races and win. The Bipot always starts on the race before leg 1 of the Place Accumulator. Permutations and Fractional betting allowed. Available on SA Races only.
Bonus (Freeplay): A financial benefit offered to customers as an incentive to join or as an extra to play promoted games.
Book: Short for a bookmaker or sportsbook that posts odds and accepts bets.
Bookmaker: A licensed individual who sets daily betting odds and lays or accepts bets. Also known as a bookie or linemaker.
Bookies SP Pot (Tote Bet): This bet type follows the standard totalisator Jackpot rules but is based on the official starting price (“SP”) disseminated and concerns the first four local races carded for the day. The payout will be determined by the multiplication of the starting price of the winning horses in the first four races, plus twenty percent i.e., at full accumulative multiple odds using the SP + 20%. No Pools. No Dividend sharing. Permutations and Fractional betting allowed.
Booster: An amount a Bookmaker in its sole discretion adds to a multiple bet to increase or “boost” its winnings.
Both halves over 1.5: 1st half must have 2 or more goals scored, the same for the second half.
Both halves under 1.5: 1st half must have 1 or no goals scored, the same for the second half.
Both teams to score: Both teams to score is a bet on whether or not both sides in a game will score, and this is also known as BTTS for short. In the BTTS market, there are two options, which are yes or no. If you select "Yes," you are placing a bet that both teams will score in the game. However, selecting "No" implies you are placing a bet on either just one team to score in the game or no goals being scored by either team.

Cash Out: Withdrawing winnings before the market or selection closes. There are no partial and automated cash-out options that allows you to withdraw only a portion of your wager or have your wager automatically cashed out when the offer reaches a specified amount.
Circle Game: A game is circled by a sportsbook because betting limits are lower than usual. This most often happens when there’s a questionable injury before a game. It can also happen if there’s potentially bad weather, or the possibility of ‘load management’ which might give a player a night off.
Clean sheet: When a team does not concede any goals in the match, and the opposite option, which is no, means that a team will concede in the match.
Closing line: The final betting odds posted prior to the start of a competition.
Co-favourite (joint): Two or more sides with identical odds to win. Common with futures odds, bookmakers may post co-favourites to win the Champions League before the tournament begins.
Combined Bets: Also known as “Crossed Bets” or multiple bets, is a bet type that has a number of different bets from various selections.
Correct score HT/FT: A betting market where you predict the score at half time or full time. Punters can modify their bet to predict the goals scored by each team in the half.
Coupon Betting: Refers to a grouping of pre-determined events listed simultaneously to promote and simplify the selection of multiple or combination bets.

Dead heat: When two or more competitors finish a horse racing or sporting event with an identical place or classification.
Decimal Odds: Odds written as a decimal including the betting unit, commonly used in the broader EU. These odds show the profit you stand to win including your stake, I.e., a price indicated as 2.25 translates into 1 as the betting unit and the remainder. 1.25, the profit, or a R10 stake would return you R22.50 inclusive of your R10 stake.
Decimal Odds Net: Odds written as a decimal excluding the betting unit, also commonly used in the EU. These odds show the profit you stand to win excluding your betting unit, I.e., a price indicated as 2.25 equals a R10 stake to win you R22.50 with a total return of R32.50.
Deductions: This happens where a horse/contestant/team is withdrawn before or after coming under starter's orders or fails to compete in a championship, all fixed odds selections on that horse/contestant/ team shall be void, except for ante post bets, and all bets struck as fixed odds on the remaining horses/contestants on the day of the race or 'with a run', shall be subject to deduction as declared and published by the Bookmaker from time-to-time.
Deposit: Paying into your betting account so you can start to wager.
Double (Tote Bet): Choose the winners of the 2 consecutive races that comprise the Double (the first of the 2 races in a Double is termed Leg 1; the second is Leg 2). A Double can be taken on all consecutive races – i.e. Races 1 & 2; 2 & 3; 3 & 4 etc.
Double chance/ First half: When you bet on multiple possibilities with just one bet. For example. Betting on Home Win or Draw, Home Win or Away Win. A First Half bet allows you to bet the same options, at lower odds. Most games are 90 Minutes Only bets, so Extra Time and penalty shootouts do not count toward the result.
Double result: A single betting option that combines the score of a game at halftime and the score at the end of the same game.
Draw: Any contest where the final score ends in a tie. In most instances, a draw is graded as a PUSH and original bet amounts are returned. A key exception is three-way lines that offer tie/draw as one of three betting options.
Draw No Bet (DNB): This betting line excludes a draw. For instance, if you bet on a home win in a DNB market, your bet is divided in half; the first half is placed on a home win, and the second half is placed on a draw. If the home team wins, you win the bet; if the game is a draw, you receive a partial refund; and if the away team wins, you lose your stake.
Drift: When odds grow longer after the opening line, they are said to be drifting.

Each-way: Common in horse racing, an each-way bet splits a wager to cover first or second place. If the market finishes first, both bets are paid out. A second-place finish, and just one of the split bets is paid.
Eachway (Tote Bet): Combines a Win and Place bet. You collect the Win and Place payouts if the horse bet on finishes FIRST. You get the Place payout if the horse runs a place. The same amount is always bet for the Win and the Place. Example: An Eachway bet taken 10 times is a R10 Win & R10 Place = R20.
Even money: Odds that return the exact amount as the original bet. A R100 bet on Fractional (1/1) American (+100) or Decimal (2.0) odds would return a R100 win or profit.
Exacta (Tote Bet): Bet on the horses to finish FIRST and SECOND in the exact order. Bet 3 different ways:
Single: Choose 1 horse for FIRST and 1 horse for SECOND.
Perm: Choose any number of horses for FIRST and for SECOND.
Box: Choose 2 or more horses. You collect if the horses chosen include the FIRST and SECOND finishers.
Exact score: The same as a Correct Score bet, it is a bet on the result at the end of a game, excluding extra time and penalty shootouts.
Exotic bet: Betting options beyond point spreads, money lines and game totals. Proposition bets, specials and parlays are the most common types of exotic bets.
Extra Time: Time added at the end of a game where a winner must be decided. In knockout football, a period of 30 minutes is added on to the end of a game if the game is tied after the normal 90 minutes.

Favourites: A favourite is simply the most favoured selection and considered the most likely to win, consequently these have the lowest odds.
First goal: A bet on which player or team will score the first goal in the game, excluding overtime and penalty shootouts. Same as first player/first team to score.
First goal interval: Predicting the time of the first goal. Options are available in 15-minute periods.
First half: All bets are settled at half-time, based on the score of the first half of the game. Same as half time.
First Past the Post (FPP): The first to pass the finish line, usually used in racing. This does not necessarily have to be the official winner if that selection is disqualified, or a penalty applied post-race.
First player to score: A bet on which player will be the first to score in a game.
Fixed Odds: Odds that have a fixed price defined by the bookmaker or agreed to. In horse racing you can choose to fix your price or take the starting price for example.
Fractional Odds: Odds written as a fraction, commonly used in the UK horse racing.
These odds show the profit you stand to win excluding your stake, for example a R10 stake at 3/1 would win you R30 plus your R10 stake back.

Goal/No goal: Goal is the option of choosing both teams to score. No Goal is a bet on just 1 team or neither scoring.
Goal/No goal: 1st half/2nd half: Betting on the goals in either the first or second half.
Goals Home/Away: A bet on the exact number of goals scored by either the Home or Away team during normal time.
Goal Line: Better known as Over/Under betting, goal line bets are placed on the total number of goals scored in a match with punters able to bet whether there will be fewer or more than the predicted total.
Going: The condition of the ground or horse racing track from hard to soft, to muddy.
Going Down: Horses making their way to the starting post.
Going In: Horses going into their stalls to start the race.

Handicap: Common in horse racing, where horses carry different weights to encourage closer competition. Better horses carry heavier weights. In other sports, such as soccer, betting odds are used to handicap the favourite team. The handicap market is one where one of the two sides is artificially given an advantage and the other a disadvantage. In football, for instance, you may give the perceived weak team a 1 to 3 goal lead; the other team would then need to beat the weak team with a difference that is more than the lead in order to win the bet.
Half-time: A bet on the results of a match at half-time.
Half-time/Full-time: A bet on the results of the game at both half-time and full-time. Both selections must be correct for your bet to win.
Head-to-Head: A bet on which person or team beats the opposite team in the head-to-head matchup. At least one competitor must finish the event, or all bets are considered void. If one or more competitor(s) fail to start all bets are considered void. If all competitors are disqualified or otherwise excluded all bets are considered void. If both competitors in a head-to-head achieve the same result and no draw odds are offered, then all bets are considered void.
Hedging: Placing more than one bet to minimise your risk of losing. ‘Hedging your bets’ is now a common term often heard outside the world of gambling.
Heinz: A Heinz consists of 57 bets involving 6 pics in different events, 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, 6 five-folds and 1 six-fold. Any 2 winning selections guarantee a return.
Highest scoring half: A bet on which half will have the most goals, first or second half.
Home advantage: When a team or contestant are competing at their home stadium/track or in their hometown.

Injury time: Additional time added to the end of a half or game to make up for time lost to stoppages like injuries or substitutions.
In-Play: is when quotes or prices on selected events or contestants are updated during the event. Thus, betting occurs after the official start but before the official end of an event.

Jackpot (Tote Bet): Choose the winners of all 4 races that comprise the Jackpot (Legs 1 to 4). One horse or more can be chosen in each of the 4 races.

Lay: Most used on betting exchanges. Laying a bet means betting against someone else winning. Also known as Not to Win (Lay bet) betting on a horse to not win their race.
Last team to score: A bet on which team will be the last to score in a football match. Bets are placed on 90 minutes play only.
Live streaming: Many betting sites provide the opportunity to watch the event you are betting on as it happens by means of ‘live streams’. In some instances, you will only be able to use a live stream if you have placed a bet.
Lucky15: A lucky 15 consists of 15 bets involving 4 selections in different events, 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 four-fold. Any one winning selection guarantees a return. If any 1 of your selections wins, 1 of the single bets gives a return. If any 2 of your selections win, 2 of the single bets and 1 of the doubles give a return. If any 3 selections win, 3 of the singles, 3 of the doubles and 1 of the trebles give a return. If all 4 selections win, then all 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and the four-fold give a return.
Lunch Pot (Tote Bet): This bet type follows the standard totalisator Jackpot rules but is based on the official starting price (“SP”) disseminated and concerns four selected races carded for the day as close to the hours of 12-2 pm. The offering is to offer customers a bet type that can be realized within the duration of their lunch hour. The payout will be determined by the multiplication of the starting price of the winning horses in the first four selected races, plus twenty percent i.e., at full accumulative multiple odds using the SP + 20%. No Pools. No Dividend sharing. Permutations and Fractional betting allowed.
Long-shot: Refers to a pick believed to be extremely unlikely to win. Often referred to as an outsider.
Loyalty Programme: Any kind of promotion which rewards long-term use of the site can be considered a loyalty programme. Also known as VIP programmes.
Lucky 15 / 31 / 63: A form of full cover betting with singles on 4, 5 or 6 selections with all possible multiple combinations covered. I.e., A lucky 31 consists of 31 bets involving 5 selections in different events, 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles and 5 four-folds and 1 five-fold. Any one winning selection guarantees a return.

Match play: any sporting event or contingency limited to two participants or markets with two or three possible outcomes.
Match race: a race limited to two participants.
Multiple bet or multiple event bet or all to come (ATC) means more than one selection in different horse races, sporting events or contingencies, combined to form one bet. Multiple bets are commonly known by the following terminology:
Double: A double, round robin or 2 play parlay is 1 bet involving 2 selections in different events. Both selections must be successful for the bet to win, with returns from the first reinvested on the second.
Treble: An accumulator bet, with 3 selections. Each selection must be correctly predicted for this to be a winning bet.
Four-fold: A four-fold or 4 play parlay is 1 bet involving 4 selections in different events. All selections must be successful for the bet to win. Winning returns are reinvested on successive selections.
Five-fold: A five-fold or 5 play parlay is 1 bet involving 5 selections in different events. All selections must be successful for the bet to win. Winning returns are reinvested on successive selections.
Six-fold: A six-fold or 6 play parlay is 1 bet involving 6 selections in different events. All selections must be successful for the bet to win. Winning returns are reinvested on successive selections.
Seven-fold: A seven-fold or 7 play parlay is 1 bet involving 7 selections in different events. All selections must be successful for the bet to win. Winning returns are reinvested on successive selections.
Eight-fold: An eight-fold or 8 play parlay is 1 bet involving 8 selections in different events. All selections must be successful for the bet to win. Winning returns are reinvested on successive selections.
Nine-fold: A nine-fold or 9 play parlay is 1 bet involving 9 selections in different events. All selections must be successful for the bet to win. Winning returns are reinvested on successive selections.
Ten-fold: A ten-fold or 10 play parlay is 1 bet involving 10 selections in different events. All selections must be successful for the bet to win. Winning returns are reinvested on successive selections.
Match-flow: Predicting the team who scores first and the result of the game after normal time. To win punters must correctly predict both selections.
Maximum bet: Refers to the highest bet you can make while placing a bet on a sport or horse racing contingency or playing a casino game, be it poker, roulette, video slots, or any other game.
Market: Means an event or occurrence of which the outcome is uncertain or unknown to any person until it happens.
Minimum Bet: The lowest amount the bookmaker will allow you to bet. It can be different depending on the sport or event.
Mobile Betting: Any kind of betting done on mobile can be considered mobile betting, whether through an app or simply a mobile desktop version of the site.
Mobile slots: Refers to video slot games that can be played on handheld devices.
Money Line: An American term referring to Full-Time Result betting. It is named as such based on the plus and minus ‘lines’ on American Odds.

Net winnings: Refers to your total payout minus deductions (if any) taxes (if any) minus your initial stake.
No Deposit Free Bet: This is a free bet you can get without ever having to make a deposit, usually rewarded after registration. You will have to make a deposit to take out your winnings as part of the terms and conditions.
Non-Runner No Bet: When a horse you’ve backed cannot run that day, you will get a refund unless ante post or indicated as such at the time of placing the bet.

Odds: Refers to price offered for different results and can rise or fall depending on the likelihood of each outcome. Odds are presented in four separate ways. I.e., fractions, decimal, net decimal and American (money line in the US).
Odds/Even: A bet on whether the total number of goals at the end of a game an odd number or an even number will be.
Online Spina Wina & Vegas games: Refers to all the games that can be found in an online casino.
Open bet:
(a) a bet, other than a totalisator bet, taken by a bookmaker on one or more contingencies, in which no fixed-odds are agreed at the time the bet is placed; or
(b) a bet in respect of which the payout is determined after the outcome of the contingency on which such a bet is struck became known, with reference to dividends generated by a totalisator.
Outright bet: A bet on the outcome of a tournament or championship in various sports. Outright markets are considered All in Run Or Not and therefore will be settled as a loss if the selection does not take part in the event. Exceptions to this rule will be stipulated under the specific rules for each sport. In cases where the event is cancelled then all bets will be declared void. In cases where the venue for an event is changed, WSB reserve the right to void any betting. Unless stated otherwise, whenever the organising association deems it fit to include any necessary rounds, matches, or series of matches (e.g. Play-offs, Play-outs, Postseason) following the end of the so-called Regular Season in order to determine the classification, league winners, promotion/relegation, etc., World Sports Betting will take into account the results and outcomes deriving from these matches for settlement purposes of tickets referring to the final league classification, promotion, relegation, etc. All events are settled based on the award ceremony or the competition’s official scoresheet, without taking into consideration the results of any subsequent investigations or disqualifications.
Over/Under: Overs and under’s are applicable across several betting markets. These markets include goals, tries, runs, bookings, or corners, and many more. I.e., for goals, you will find options such as "over 1.5," "over 2.5," "under 1.5," "under 2.5," etc. Over 1.5 goals mean two goals or more must be scored in the game for your bet to win, while under 1.5 goals means there must be less than two goals in the game for your bet to win. The higher the number, the more goals are required to be scored in the game for the overs market, while there must be fewer than that number for the under’s market. This same principle applies to the overs and under’s market for bookings and corners.
Overtime: This is the time added to regular time and is specifically excluded from regular time and varies amongst contingencies.

Penalty Yes/No: A bet on whether or not penalties will take place.
Pick 3 (Tote Bet): Choose the winners of any 3 consecutive races. One horse or more can be chosen in each of the three races. Fractional betting can be used.
Pick 6 (Tote Bet): Choose the winners of all 6 races that comprise the Pick 6 (Legs 1 to 6). One horse or more can be chosen in each of the 6 races.
Place: When a selection ‘places’ it finishes within the positions that are stated to pay out. A small number of runners might mean only the first two finishers place. In a big field down to fifth or sixth might be considered a place finish.
Place (Tote Bet): Bet a horse to finish a place.

In selected major races, like the Vodacom Durban July and the Sansui Summer Cup the number of PLACE payouts may be increased to include the FIFTH and SIXTH-PLACED runners.
Place Accumulator (Tote Bet): Choose a horse, or horses, to finish FIRST, SECOND or THIRD in each of the 7 races that comprise the Place Accumulator (Legs 1 to 7). You can win the bet many times. Example: You choose one horse in each of Legs 1 to 4 and two horses in each of Legs 5, 6 and 7. If all choices finish in the first 3, payout is won eight times (1x1x1x1x2x2x2 = 8).
Potential winnings: This is the potential winnings if every selection in a bet is correct as displayed on a bet slip.
Push Rule (2-way Markets): In the event of a Winner market (with just home and away team as outcomes) being offered and the event results in a draw WSB will settle the market as void.
Punter: A slang term for a bettor or someone who places a bet.

Quartet (Tote Bet): Bet on the horses to finish FIRST, SECOND, THIRD and FOURTH in the exact order. There are 4 different ways to bet the Trifecta & Quartet: Single, Multi, Float (Rove) & Box. A popular Trifecta option is Multi, choosing one horse for FIRST with three or more other horses for SECOND and THIRD. Cost of betting 1 horse for FIRST with:

Referral Bonus: Any kind of bonus you get for referring other people to a betting site. Generally, it is a free bet or a cash bonus. The bonuses differ from site to site.
Related bets: Where the outcome of one part of the bet contributes directly to the outcome of the other. For example, a bet on team A to win a final and another bet to with the trophy outright in the same event.
Reverse forecast: A forecast bet predicting a minimum of 1st and 2nd place where either selection can finish in either place to win.
Round robin: Refers to a three-selection wager that consists of 10 bets. These are three doubles, one treble bet, and six bets consisting of three up and down single stake about pairs. One or more winning selections will guarantee a return.

Scratching or withdrawal: This means a participant has been withdrawn from a particular race or event prior to the start thereof.
Second half: A bet on the result of the second half result only.
Single bet: The simplest form of betting, one wager for one event, a selection of a single contestant for a bet in a horse race, sporting event, other event or contingency.
Single bet: This type of bet is a bet on only one outcome and one game. Whether you win or lose your bet is dependent on the outcome you have placed your bet on.
I.e. “1x2”
The most common betting market for practically every sport is "1x2," or the match winner. It is a 3-way market in most sports, including soccer, rugby, cricket etc, which means there are three possible outcomes for the game: 1 for the home team to win, X for a draw, and 2 for the away team to win. However, it is a two-way market in other sports, such as basketball and tennis, which means there is no possibility for the game to end in a draw. It is either 1 for a home win or 2 for an away win.

Stake: This is the amount of money placed or invested in a bet.
Starting price: The starting price of a horse shall be the last fixed odds laid or displayed by the bookmaker on that horse, prior to the start of the race. In the event of a late withdrawal, where no new betting is displayed before the start of the race, then the starting price shall be the last price displayed subject to deductions if any.
Suit: Refers to different types of playing cards. There are four different suits in a standard 52-card playing deck, clubs, spades, hearts, and diamonds. In standard decks, every suit has one of each denomination, including face cards.
Super Heinz: A Super Heinz consists of 120 bets involving 7 selections in different events, 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 four-folds, 21 five-folds, 7 six-folds and 1 seven-fold. Any two winning selections guarantee a return.
Swinger (Tote Bet): Pick 2 horses in a race and couple them in a Swinger. You win if the 2 horses chosen to fill 2 of the first 3 places. There are 3 winning combinations 1st & 2nd (or 2nd & 1st); 1st & 3rd (or 3rd & 1st); 2nd & 3rd (or 3rd & 2nd). No payout 3rd & 3rd if deadheat for THIRD.

Table limit: Refers to the bet limits at a table game. In order to play, players must make the table limit minimum bet. Simultaneously, the same rule limits the top amount a player can bet at the same table.
Terms and Conditions: An online document which breaks down the rules of that particular market, subject, promotion, or the site in general. They are a vital component of the operations and should be read carefully by all punters.
Three-way bet: A bet on the result of a game out of the three possible options: home win, draw, away win.
Total: When an exact number is quoted as the line for an over/ under market, if the result will be the quoted line, then bets will be made void.
Trifecta (Tote Bet): Bet on the horses to finish FIRST, SECOND and THIRD in the exact order.
Trixie 3 Team/Selection: Consists of 4 bets involving 3 selections in different events, 3 doubles and 1 treble. Any two winning selections guarantee a return. If any 2 of your selections win, 1 of the double bets gives a return. If all 3 of your selections win, all 3 of the doubles and the treble give a return.

Under: Referring to over and under markets, betting on a score to be below a certain number.
Underdog: A selection that is expected to lose, a common example is a lower league club playing a team in a higher league.
